Baralacha La (or Baralacha Pass) is a high mountain pass in the Zanskar Range, sitting at an impressive altitude of 16,040 feet (4,890 meters) above sea level. It serves as a crucial geographical bridge on the legendary Manali-Leh Highway, connecting the Lahaul district of Himachal Pradesh with the Ladakh region.
In the local language, Baralacha translates to "pass where many roads meet." Historically, it was a vital junction where ancient trade routes from Zanskar, Ladakh, Spiti, and Lahaul converged. Even today, it acts as a high-altitude plateau where three major mountain ranges cross paths: the Pir Panjal, the Zanskar, and the Great Himalayas.
