Drigung (also spelled as Drikung) is a region located in central Tibet, which is a historical and cultural region in the Himalayas. The region is named after the Drigung Monastery, which is one of the six major monasteries of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism.
Drigung Monastery was founded in the 12th century by Kyobpa Jigten Sumgön, who was a prominent Tibetan Buddhist master and the founder of the Drikung Kagyu lineage. The monastery is known for its stunning architecture and is situated in a picturesque location on the slopes of Mount Gephel.
Drigung region is also known for its natural beauty, with many high mountain peaks, glaciers, and alpine lakes. The region is an important pilgrimage destination for Tibetan Buddhists, who visit the Drigung Monastery and other sacred sites in the area.
Today, Drigung remains an important center of Tibetan culture and religion, with many monasteries, nunneries, and sacred sites located throughout the region.
