Punakha is a picturesque town in Bhutan, known for its rich history, stunning natural beauty and spiritual significance.  Located in the Himalayan foothills, it was once the capital of Bhutan and remains an important cultural and religious center.
One of Punakha’s main highlights is the Punakha Dzong, a magnificent fortress-monastery built in 1637 at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (male river) and Mo Chhu (female river).  This dzong is considered one of the most beautiful in Bhutan and plays a vital role in the country’s spiritual life — it’s also where royal weddings and important state rituals take place.
Surrounded by rice paddies and terraced hills, Punakha offers a serene landscape, especially beautiful in spring when jacaranda trees bloom around the dzong.  The region is also popular for river rafting, scenic hikes (like to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten), and visits to traditional villages.
Punakha is about a 3-hour drive from Thimphu, the current capital and is a must-visit for anyone seeking a blend of Bhutan’s natural charm and deep-rooted culture.
